Help is coming April 20-27 for Michigan consumers who want to learn how to better manage their personal finances. More than 125 free classes and events will be offered during the state’s tenth-annual Money Smart Week®.
The week is coordinated by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, which serves most of Michigan, and hundreds of partner organizations promoting financial education. It is designed to teach consumers about money management and generate awareness of the resources available on a wide range of topics such as saving, investing and using credit wisely.
Seminars and activities will be carried out by representatives of more than one hundred local and statewide community groups, financial institutions, not-for-profit organizations, businesses, schools, libraries, government agencies, places of worship and media outlets. Almost all of the activities are free and are being held in counties throughout the state, including Genesee, Ingham, Isabella, Jackson, Kent, Macomb,Monroe, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw, and Wayne. “Money Smart Week Michigan’s statewide and community-based efforts, as well as its partners’ commitment, will make this initiative a success again this year,” said Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President and CEO Charles Evans. “We invite consumers of all ages, including children, to take part in the week’s diverse personal finance offerings.”
Added Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, “Every week of the year, my office offers free educational seminars on how to spend wisely and avoid criminals who
prey on honest citizens. Money Smart Week is a welcome opportunity to remind consumers to take the time to learn how to make smart financial decisions, now and in the future.” Michigan Money Smart Week Chair Kelly Masters said the initiative takes place over an eight day period in April, which is also Financial Literacy Month.
“Money Smart Week is a valuable opportunity for all of us, including educators, service providers and the media, to work together and be part of improving our communities and our state by cultivating more fiscally sound consumers,” she explained.
